Why are all of the songs .exe files?

The files linked to from this site have been packaged using compression (see below). In order to make it easier for novice users, all songs have been compressed using self-extracting executable files. This means that everything required to decompress the archive is built right in to the archive itself. To use the song in FoF, just double-click it and pick your songs directory. It will automatically be placed into it's own folder. If you prefer to do things the old fashioned way, or are planning on decompressing multiple files at once, you can still interface with these files using your favorite decompression utility.

What is a compressed file?

Some files, like RAR and ZIP files, are just files that compress and contain other files. All songs on this site are packaged using compression. In order to use the songs in Frets on Fire, you must first extract (decompress) the file. You can either use the extractor that has been built in to the file, or another decompression programs (once installed, just right-click an archive and choose extract). Alternative decompression programs are listed below.

How do I add a song into FoF?

If your song is compressed, you must first extract it (see above). You should end up with a folder with at least a song.ini, notes.mid, and song.ogg file in it. Copy this whole directory to your songs directory (/Your_FoF_Directory/data/songs/).

Why do songs cut out when I miss a note?

Sometimes, the song.ogg and guitar.ogg are the same file. In many cases, this duplicate file will be removed to save download time. To fix this, simply make a copy of the guitar.ogg file, and rename it to song.ogg. If you have many songs, there are tools available to help you automate the process.

What about viruses?

Distrubuting infected files is not the best way to ensure return visitors. To ensure a quality user experience, all uploaded files are scanned with at least two up-to-date antivirus engines.

What about copyright?

Users are encouraged to only upload songs that they hold the copyright to. As the song processing done on the site is automated, I must rely on the honor system. If you hold the copyright to a song on this site, and do not authorize it's distribution, contact me and I will remove the link to the file.
